Maintenance work such as cleaning gravestones, gardening or colouring gravestone inscriptions are usual and practical components of the Volksbund's youth work.
A well-known wisdom says that you can learn a lot about a society by seeing how it takes care of their dead. Thinking about this and realising that a well-maintained cemetery is not something to be taken for granted are aspects that the participants experience during their practical work. They become more aware of the individual graves and are confronted with names and dates of life. They have time to reflect on the individual personalities hidden behind a simple cross. That is often described as a valuable experience.
